A New School Year 8.9.20

As we approach the 2020-2021 school year, the Douglas PTA board has already been meeting regularly with our organization’s purpose at the forefront of our planning.

In a normal year, the Douglas PTA is the sole funding mechanism for teacher stipends and grants, our community garden, our butterfly garden, schoolwide projects, various school clubs, the spelling bee, mathletes, Odyssey of the Mind — the list goes on. We also support the school library through the Scholastic Book Fair, fund the Cultural Arts Program, and fund our school food pantry. We pay for these programs through two major fundraisers, and to be honest, we are not sure what those fundraising opportunities will look like this year.

Our prospects to fulfill our purpose and programs this year will look different than in prior years, but we will earnestly continue to support our students, families and teachers. Health and safety will be a priority and our beloved events and fundraisers will need to be reconstructed as we look toward new opportunities to support our organizational goals.

If you have ever considered joining the PTA, this is the year to join and help us.

We welcome all input from our families, teachers, and the wider community. Please see the link below to join the PTA and watch this space for further information on the start of school.

We would like to show our Douglas teachers that our school families have their backs and have set a goal for 50 families to join the PTA this week ahead of the school year starting. Please support our school community by joining and/or donating at https://douglas.memberhub.store/.

Thank you for your support!

A Message from Principal Burns 7.16.20

Hey Douglas Community!

I hope everyone is doing well. There is certainly a lot of energy around the reopening of schools. There is new information being shared daily with schools and with the community. As of right now, you have a choice to be a part of the Virtual Academy or Plan B. The details of the Virtual Academy are available on the WCPSS website and there is a virtual open house tonight. The details of Plan B are dependent on the number of students that enroll in Virtual Academy and students that withdraw from WCPSS. This makes the staffing plan less secure than in years past. I will do my best to honor grouping requests due to childcare and teacher requests once we have the enrollment information. While we do not have answers to all of our questions yet, please know that my goals are creating a safe environment for students and staff, addressing the social emotional needs of all Douglas community members while providing a meaningful, rigorous educational experience.  I recognize this can be stressful for families to make a decision, I am available if you would like to discuss the specific needs.
Be Safe,
Principal Burns

¡Hola Douglas Community!

Please visit Digital Dragons – Douglas Teachers Read

Good morning Dragon families! In the coming days we will be sharing some read-alouds from staff. They will be reading books relative to diversity, equality, and civil rights. We invite your families to come together to listen to our staff members share these stories. We hope that these will provide an opportunity for education, conversation and comfort for our school community.

Love,

Your Douglas PTA

Principal Burns Dragon Update – May 1

We did it! Another great week of distance learning! Thank you sensational students, patient parents and terrific teachers!

Our staff reviewed last week’s survey results and brought a focus to our distance learning. We are dedicated to easy navigation, virtual interactions and providing meaningful feedback. The positive comments were shared, appreciated. and celebrated. The areas of improvement that were noted have been discussed and plans have been made to mitigate them. Specific concerns were addressed by the administration team. I appreciate your support as we continue to provide the best educational experience for students and families we can during this time.

Monday, May the 4th (feel free to show me the FORCE), from 9-11, the last of our hotspots and chromebooks will be distributed. Please let your teacher know if you plan to pick one up.

Be safe and stay home.

Principal Burns
