WELCOME TO THE DRAGONEER!
A big part of our mission as your PTA is to serve as a link between the school and each student’s family. One way we do that is through this e-newsletter, the Dragoneer. We try to send it twice a month, and we welcome your ideas for content. If you have announcements or events to share, please submit them through our quick Contact form or send us an email: dragoneer.dpta@gmail.com. As we’re working to refine our email list, we may have included families who no longer have children at Douglas. If that’s you, please scroll to the bottom of this email and click “unsubscribe.” Or you can reply to this message and we’ll take care of it. Thanks!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT CARPOOL SAFETY
“As stated to me by the Raleigh Police Department, the school crossing guards are responsible for the safety of students crossing the streets. They are not responsible for directing traffic. Please be a respectful member of the carpool lane and adhere to our practice of lining up on Ortega and not cutting in at Windsor. Thank you for being a good example for our students!” ~ Principal Burns

It’s Dragonfire Time!

We’re about halfway through our 11th annual Dragonfire Fundraiser, and we need your support to finish strong!

Our 2017 goal is to raise $10,000.

Dragonfire is our annual passive fundraiser in which 100% of the donations go directly to the Douglas PTA. In past years, Dragonfire has been responsible for a wide range of campus contributions including:

  • Arts, Science, Math and Literacy Nights
  • Playground Upgrades
  • Classroom Smartboards
  • Classroom Libraries

This year we are planning to invest in:

  • Visiting Artists
  • Field Trip Scholarships
  • Staff Support
  • New Extracurricular Clubs
  • Technology Upgrades

Please encourage your students to participate in the fundraising fun, too. Plastic baggies went home in Monday folders for them to fill with piggy bank and chore change and compete in the Classroom Coin War!

The winning classroom will be awarded a fun day with Mr. Burns!

Does your Dragon want to play soccer with Mr. Burns?  Have lunch outside with Mr. Burns? How about create a class art project with Mr. Burns? Conduct a scientific experiment with Mr. Burns?

Here is their chance! Each classroom will have a collection jar and change will be totaled at the end of Dragonfire. The winning class will be announced on WDES, our student-produced morning TV news show.

Dragonfire information (and registration forms) went home in Monday folders. If you have any questions, please contact our Fundraising VP, Morgan Blue: morgansblue@gmail.com. Thank you for everything you do for our awesome school. Let’s give Dragonfire our all to help make Douglas even more awesome!

PTA GENERAL MEETING
The PTA will have a general meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, right before the school Open House. We will vote in this year’s board members, review the budget, and talk about planned initiatives for the 2017-2018 school year. Hope you can join us!

IT’S PTA MEMBERSHIP TIME AGAIN!
Why do you need to join the PTA every year? By joining the PTA, you are counted in an official capacity and we can then apply for grants and show that we have active parental involvement by our registered PTA numbers. If you missed us at Meet the Teacher, it’s not too late to join the PTA. We’ll have a membership table set up at the Open House on Thursday. Or, download this form and send it with a check for $12 to your child’s teacher.

DRAGONFIRE IS COMING!
First things first, what IS Dragonfire? Dragonfire is Douglas’s annual passive fundraiser. Held every fall, this is a fun and easy way for the PTA to kick off the school year and start investing in campus and classroom projects.

Our Dragonfire fundraiser allows the PTA to retain 100% of the money raised to support all of the PTA programs for your children. Please consider asking your employer if there is a matching donation program where you work.

Our 2017 goal is $10,000 and our campaign is planned for next week, September 11-15.

To get the excitement going and have all of our little Dragons included in the fun, we will have a coin war between classrooms. Change will be collected and counted daily with results being announced during the daily WDES broadcasts. The class that brings in the most change will be awarded with “Mr. Burns as teacher for the day!” Mr. Burns will join students as a co-teacher for half of an instructional day. He will participate in class recess, maybe an art project, perhaps a trip to the media center, lunch, etc. — It is up to the class as to how they will spend time with our amazing and hands-on principal.

If we reach our goal, we’ll have a school-wide pajama day!

Forms and change bags will be going home next week in green folders. Keep an eye out for details!

SPIRIT NIGHTS WITH THE DRAGONS
Spirit Nights check so many important boxes for our community… Having fun. Raising money for our school. Supporting local businesses.

The PTA fundraising team has planned several new spirit nights along with some annual favorites. Check out the school calendar on the Douglas website and plan to join us throughout the year. Please contact Spirit Night Chair Tene Williams-Marcus, tashakiw@yahoo.com, for details.

You Asked, We Answered! A Handy FAQ for Douglas Families

As we start a new school year, even the most seasoned Douglas families have questions about everything from carpool to special events. Here is the first in a series of FAQ blog posts, based on an informal poll we conducted this summer.

We received so many great questions that they couldn’t all fit in one post! This first installment focuses on transportation and the school schedule. Other FAQ posts will be coming soon!

What is the bell schedule?

8:45 a.m.: First bell, school doors open
9:15 a.m.: Start of classes
3:45 p.m.: School day ends
4:15 p.m.: Final bell, all carpool/walker children must be picked up

What time does school let out on early release days?

The first bell rings at 1:15; all children in carpool should be picked up by 1:45. After-school care runs on its normal schedule, until 6 p.m.

What is the bus schedule?

Everything you need to know about bus routes is on the “Transportation” page of the school website: http://www.wcpss.net/Page/21988.

How do carpool drop-off and pick-up work?

Drop-off: The school doors open at 8:45 a.m., so cars line up along Ortega Road (toward Lambeth Drive). Once the bell rings, Safety Patrol students and school staff will help children get out of their cars in the driveway in front of the school. Children must be dropped off by 9:15. If you are running late, please park and walk your children into the front office.

Pick-up: The school day ends at 3:45. Cars line up along Ortega Road (toward Lambeth Drive) and must display carpool numbers in the front window (hanging from rearview mirror) so that staff can see them. Your children will be called and instructed to proceed to one of the colored dragon paw prints on the sidewalk immediately in front of the school entrance. Safety Patrol and school staff will help your children get into the car. Children must be picked up by 4:15.

How does before/after school care work?

Douglas provides before- and after-school care programs in house. Before-school care starts at 7 a.m., and after school care runs until 6 p.m. After-school care operates like usual (until 6 p.m.) on early-release days. Student enrollment forms, parent information sheets and payment schedules will be available at Meet the Teacher night and Open House. You can also apply for enrollment anytime during the year by contacting the school office. Here is more information from WCPSS.

How does pick-up and drop-off for appointments work?

It’s important to let your teacher know (by their preferred method of communication – it’s different for every teacher) that your child will miss class for a medical, dental or other appointment. To pick up your child, come into the front office and ask that he or she be called for dismissal. You’ll need to sign them out on the computer in the office. When you bring your child back to school, be sure to have a note from the doctor, dentist, etc., and give it to the school receptionist.

If I need to pick up my child early from school, what do I do?

If you know in advance that you will be picking up your child early from school, let your teacher know by sending a note. If it is a last-minute pick-up, come inside to the front office to sign out your child. The staff will call for your child to be dismissed.

If my child needs to go home with another child, what do I do?

Any change in departures must be written in a note for the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher will send notes to the office to be copied and returned to the classroom teacher. No students are allowed to leave campus in any way other than what is set up by the parents at the beginning of the year. This includes children wanting to go home with another student. Prior notification to the classroom teacher and/or the office is required.
