Craig Cerveny has been named Teacher of the Year for Douglas Elementary!

Mr. Cerveny has been a teacher at Douglas for 12 years, and this is his sixth year teaching CCK (Cross Categorical Kindergarten). An article about him is coming soon to the PTA website.

THE READVOLUTION CONTINUES!
The READvolution is a countywide literacy challenge, and we want to show how our Douglas Dragons soar!  This challenge will run until January and is all about encouraging students to read at least 20 minutes a day and building a life-long love of reading.

Each week classes have been competing in “Reading Rounds”, with students working together to gain the most “points” or minutes read as a class. We are hoping to instill in everyone that when you read, everyone is a winner!

Please ask your child if their class is in a Round this week, and check in to see if they are reading daily and logging their work in online. We would love every child’s participation, and thank you for your support!

If you need any help with logging in or recording your child’s work online, please contact Ms. York at dyork@wcpss.net, or by stopping by at the Media Center.

MUSIC NEWS
Important dates for the Douglas Chorus:

Nov 30th – The Douglas Chorus sings at the Community Christmas Celebration at 6:30 p.m. (5060 Six Forks Road). Come out and hear the performance!

December 5th -The Douglas Chorus will sing at The Cardinal Senior Center at 4:30 p.m.

December 6th – the Douglas Chorus sings at our school at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

We are still in need of a carpenter to build a rolling platform for the electric piano. If you can help, please email Ms. Zelasky: szelasky@wcpss.net

THE BEAST RETURNS TO DOUGLAS
On Monday, Nov. 20, The Beast, a musical group with local roots, will perform at Douglas for grades 3 and 4 (these are the grades who did not see The Beast perform last year). Based in Durham, The Beast is dedicated to education and cultural outreach, with a focus on African American culture. Emcee Pierce Freelon is a professor of African American Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill and NC Central University. He and the band explore oral tradition through a wide range of musical genres, including spirituals, jazz, and hip-hop during the performances.

The performance is funded through the Douglas PTA and a grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County. Throughout the school year, several performance groups and professional teaching artists come to Douglas through a partnership between the PTA and the United Arts Council.

CLASSROOM YEARBOOK PHOTOS
The yearbook committee is hoping you can help us capture memories from your classroom for the yearbook. As you take pictures of your class throughout the year, please send any photos that you think are yearbook-worthy to douglasyearbookphotos@gmail.com. Please include your name, class and grade for all photo submissions. While our team of photographers will be taking pictures of each class throughout the year, we still need your help in capturing photos for your class’ yearbook page! HELP NEEDED!
We’re looking for a carpenter to build a frame for the outside drama stage. It would allow for students to put up scenery, etc., during their self-created plays. If you can help, please contact Heidi Bledsoe: hbledsoe@wcpss.net

And our Music Wall needs help! Please consider donating items like metal cookie sheets, racks, grates, pipes, etc. It would also be nice to have a parent who knows how to attach these items so they STAY. 🙂 We’d love a xylophone made out of PVC pipe but not sure how to attach and need someone who can cut to varying lengths. ART SUPPLIES NEEDED

JOIN THE RUN CLUB FOR THE JINGLE BELL RUN!
Attention Douglas Dragons! Run Club is inviting every Douglas family to join in the 5k Jingle Bell Run we are doing on December 2. If you’re interested in running with us, Please go to the JBR/Raleigh website and join our team. We are listed as Douglas Dragons. It’s a super fun event for the whole family. ¡LA LECTURA CONTINÚA!
¡READvolution es un desafío de alfabetización en todo el condado, y queremos mostrar cómo se elevan nuestros Douglas Dragons! Este desafío se extenderá hasta enero y se trata de alentar a los estudiantes a leer al menos 20 minutos al día y construir un amor por la lectura de por vida.

Cada semana las clases han estado compitiendo en “Rondas de lectura”, con estudiantes trabajando juntos para obtener la mayor cantidad de “puntos” o minutos leídos como clase. Esperamos inculcar a todos que cuando lees, ¡todos ganan!

Pregúntele a su hijo si su clase está en una ronda esta semana, y verifique si están leyendo a diario y registrando su trabajo en línea. Nos encantaría la participación de todos los niños y ¡gracias por su apoyo!

LA BESTIA VUELVE A DOUGLAS
