A Message From Principal Burns on Plan B Return to School

Good morning, Plan B Families!  We are excited to begin welcoming students back to campus soon!  We have been working tirelessly to create a safe plan for all students and staff.  Below you will find a link to a folder with important reopening information that I urge you to read carefully.  When you open this folder, you will have access to information about Arrival & Dismissal, Day to Day Guidelines, Before & After School Care, Symptom Screening Procedure, When Your Child Can Return to School After Illness, Learning Schedules; and, a school map.

We will hold a question and answer session on Monday, October 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. via the following Google Meet link: meet.google.com/afx-edfk-tjj.  We will also be issuing carpool numbers to families and collecting medication on Friday, October 23, from 9:00-10:30 & 2:00-3:00 via the bus loop (parking lot to the right of the school).

Virtually Unstoppable,

Derek H. Burns

You’re Invited: Campus Clean-Up

Leaves, weeds and trash, oh my!

Our lovely campus needs a little TLC before school starts back for Plan B students. Please consider volunteering at your leisure anytime before Oct. 26 to spruce up the campus. Whether pulling weeds, picking up trash, blowing leaves, painting or power-washing, any help you provide will make a big difference!

Join us for the 1st PTA General Meeting of the Year!

We hope you’ll be able to join us at our PTA general meetings this year. All are welcome! We’ve tried to adjust the times to make the meetings more accessible for working families.

Our first PTA general meeting of the year will take place Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. Join the meeting here.

Hope to see you there!

New Spirit Wear Is Here!

Our new spirit wear is all about being comfy and cozy while we learn from home. Think flannels for PJ day (every day?), soft-spun and regular tees, plush hoodies and fleece blankies to curl up with in front of your next Google Meet.

We also have some loved classics like car magnets and our popular Douglas trucker hat.

We cannot wait to see everyone in their new spirit wear, which is available now for preorder! Items will be distributed at September’s school material pickup event — stay tuned for exact dates from the school.

‘Our Turn to Step Up’

This year, the early bird award goes to Sam Hershey! He was the very first parent to join the PTA this summer, before school even started. Here’s what he had to say about why the PTA is so important to him:

“We are very excited to be a part of the Douglas community/PTA. We are big supporters of public education, and we understand the important role our son’s teachers and the administrators at Douglas will play in his growth as a person. It’s important to us that they know how much we appreciate them. We also appreciate the many parents before us who have contributed countless hours to make Douglas a great school. Now it’s our turn to step up and continue the tradition.”

Why, thank you Sam! Please follow Sam’s lead and join online today!

Important Updates: Food Distribution and Child Care

Food Distribution

Changes to federal food program rules may affect food distribution. It’s important that families fill out the WCPSS free and reduced lunch application no matter where we are currently learning. Please note that last year’s qualifications expire 30 days after the first day of school and this form must be filled out annually. Details here: https://www.wcpss.net/meals

Child Care

With school now underway, many working parents are facing the added stress of finding a safe place for their children during the day that can also support their remote learning. The good news is that there is ample licensed child care available across the state, and there are a number of organizations helping families access it.

  • In partnership with Child Care Resources and Referral, the NC Department of Health and Human Services created a free hotline to connect families to licensed care for their school-age children. Families can call the hotline at 1-888-600-1685. DHHS also published a guide for parents on What to Know When Looking for School-Age Child Care.
  • The Families and Schools Together (FAST) Initiative is a community effort to help address the childcare needs facing our community during remote learning. There are providers currently offering childcare at below-market rates who have the capacity to enroll more children. Scholarships and subsidies are available on a case-by-case basis. Please visit www.wakefast.org for more information.
